There are times when you have to choose between doing what is morally right, and what is right in the sight of others. In this case, having Chioma spend the night with me was morally right, because of her ill health. I mean, what if her condition grew worse over the night? She’d definitely need someone to help her out where necessary; and even though she seemed OK before I left, I wasn’t still comfortable with her state. And yes I know, for someone in a relationship, and even for someone like Chioma who has caused a fight or two in my relationship, I shouldn’t by any means be considering having her over the night. But what can a good man do???
Times like these, it would be nice for one to have a witness; or atleast put someone on the know, so if things go south, you’d have someone with whom you’d be speaking in one voice. The dynamics of my relationship has made it difficult for me to do something solely on the premise that my intentions are pure – And for a situation such as this, I needed a two-step authentication kinda stunt. So I decided to call my one true friend, PRECIOUS… “Oboy how far na”? Was my first response when he picked up the phone. “I DE o… Ehen, I have even been meaning to call you sef; there’s something I want to discuss with you. So…” I cut him short just before he started his epistle of whatever he wanted to say. “We’d discuss whatever you wanted to tell me much later; but for now, I need your help and advice on some issue” I said. I explained everything to him, stating my fears, concerns and worries. He suggested I let her come over to spend the night, but be extremely careful as not to let things get out of hand. I already had that in mind though, like she’d have to sleep in the bedroom, while I sleep on the couch in the sitting room; worst case scenario, I’d have to be going to check on her at intervals. So after dropping the call with Precious, I quickly went to the bedroom to lay my bed properly, and ensure everything was in place before setting out to her flat.
That night was one of my longest nights in recent times. Aside the fact that I didn’t get quality sleep because I was waking up at intervals, I also couldn’t get my mind off the possibility of hanty showing up first thing in the morning and meeting Chioma at my place; there’s no amount of explanation I’d give in this life that would convince her otherwise. One of those times I went into the bedroom to check on Chioma, I met her absent. Called out to her and got a response from the bathroom. “Hope you’re OK”? I asked, she responded “Yeah I’m fine” her voice sounding better than it did earlier that evening. I heaved a sigh of relief, knowing that she was getting better. But I was going to suggest she goes to the hospital first thing in the morning, even though she feels better. My thought was interrupted by the sound of the water cistern, and thereafter the tap on the sink. She came out, looking even better than she sounded. “I can see you’re feeling better now” I said, rather softly. “Yeah I do feel better… Come here you sweet soul” she said while opening her arms, inviting me for a hug. I reluctantly walked into her arms and hugged her. Her body was still warm, and it gave me some sort of comfort. “Thank you for being a good friend, I really appreciate” she said, while rubbing my back. I nodded, tapped her back and broke off the embrace. “But I’d suggest you still go to the hospital in the morning for checkup, just so we’d be sure what exactly is or was wrong” I replied. “Sure! I already had it in mind – there’s this private clinic I saw their sign post somewhere around the entrance of the next 2 streets the other day, we’d just go there” she said, smiling. “We? Why we? Do I have to go with you? I mean, you’re already feeling better now, it’s just to have you checked out, no big deal; I don’t think you’d need company”. Her countenance changed, her face suddenly looking like those ‘Over-pampered ajebutter last borns’. “But you know I don’t really know my way around yet… Just follow me na, please!! Tiny please!!!” she was holding her left little finger with her right hand, and covering one of her eyes, wearing the fakest smile I’ve seen in a while. “Alright! I’d follow you, but I won’t spend more than 30mins with you” I said. She joyfully ran towards me and jumped on my body, saying thank you. After then, she picked up her phone and keys, and went to her flat.
It was 4:30am. I walked her to my door, waited till she had entered her flat and locked her door, then came inside, locked my door, headed straight for the bedroom and landed on the bed like a log of wood. I needed some sound sleep, even if it will be for 3hours.
By 7:30am, I was up already, doing my usual house chores. I felt a bit better, after the little amount of sleep I had on my bed. I was still cleaning my sitting room when my phone rang; it was a message from Precious.
“Hello bro! I really need to discuss something with you, it’s quite important. I’d come over later in the day so we can talk in person”.
After reading the message, I couldn’t help but wonder what was so important that couldn’t wait. In my mind I was like, I hope it’s not one of those Ponzi schemes that he’s wanting to discuss with me o, those ‘Invest 5k and refer 5 people to make 100k in 5days’ kinda thing. Because that’s how, when we were in our final year in school, this boy almost died😂😂😂He went to invest his school fees and some of his savings in MMM then, just before the thing crashed. Omo! Bbaba was like a living corpse😂😂 the slightest intensity of wind could sway him left and right like a palm tree. We (his friends in school) had to put ourselves together to raise the school fees for him to pay; it took him months to recover from that financial dip. But he seemed not to have learnt his lessons as he recently narrowly escaped same from another Ponzi scheme. I just hope that wasn’t it sha. I was still thinking about Precious’ message when Chioma’s call came in; “Can we leave by say 8am? So we get to come back on time” she said. “Errm, that’s fine” I replied. I hurriedly finished up my chores, had my bath and wore something smart; a pair of Jean, polo and sneakers.
We arrived at the hospital in less than 15mins, as it wasn’t far from our house. She was asked to open a file abi case note as the nurse kept calling it. They took her details, and she was told to sit and wait for her turn to enter the doctor’s office. When it got to her turn, she entered the office. I didn’t go in with her because I felt it wasn’t proper. A few minutes later, she came out and whispered to me that she was going to the lab to do some tests. “Oh that’s fine” I said almost miming. Another patient entered the doctor’s office, and while he was there, Chioma came back from the lab and came to sit close to me. I was busy playing CANDY CRUSH on my phone, to atleast keep myself busy. “They said the results will be out in the next 10mins”. At about that time, someone wearing a lab coat, came from the corridor Chioma had previously entered, holding a paper in her hand; she walked straight into the doctor’s office. On her way out, she looked in our direction and smiled at us. I wondered why she did that, but then I just shook it off. As the patient in the doctor’s office was coming out, he asked “Who’s Chioma”? She rose her hand; the patient signaled that the doctor was the one calling her. She rose up, and entered the office. After a while, she came out; she could barely manage a smile as she walked towards the corridor she had previously entered holding her case note in her hand without saying a word to me. I looked round and saw that no other patient was waiting to see the doctor, so I decided to go in and ask him about her condition. I knocked on the door, opened and entered. I greeted the doctor and told him I was here in respect of my friend who just stepped out. “Oh! You’re the one that came with her?” he asked. I nodded, taking my seat in front of him with my eyes fixed on him. “I hope there’s no problem sha? Because she looked a bit moody while she stepped out just now, and that’s why I even said let me come in and find out” I said. “Errm! No big problem anyways, she seems to be having early signs of cyesis, plus her lab results showed that she has plasmodiasis as well, that’s all” the doctor said. “Sir, I’m not really good with these medical languages o, can you please break it down to my level”? I begged. He smiled and said, OK! In plain English, she has malaria. And I said “oh! OK! What about typhoid? Does she not have typhoid? because I almost suggested she just go to a chemist and get drugs for malaria and typhoid, but on a second thought, I felt it would be better she just comes sttaight to the hospital”. He managed a weak smile and said “No, she doesn’t have typhoid”. I heaved a sigh of relief and said “But doctor, can you just still treat her for malaria and typhoid? Because she’s new in the area and…” The doctor interrupted me and said “My friend, it doesn’t work that way. Malaria and typhoid are not twins, and it’s not easy to come down with typhoid. So we’d just manage her for the malaria, for which she has gone to take her medicines and injections; next is to ensure she comes back or go to any government hospital sooner or later to register for Ante-natal care.
Wait!!! What? Ante-natal? Is she preg… You mean she’s pregnant? I retorted… “yeah she is. Her pregnancy test result came out positive; that explains in part why she was vomiting repeatedly yesterday, as she said”. Still looking bewildered, I stood up from my chair, thanked the doctor and stepped out of the door. I met Chioma standing at the door, with a nylon of drugs in her hand. “Let’s go home” she said.
On our way home, we barely spoke to each other. A hundred and one things were just going through my mind; how did she get pregnant? Who impregnated her? Could it be… ?
“I’ll be travelling home tomorrow; I’d keep you posted on my plans – Thanks a lot for your help”. This was all she could mumble when we just got into the compound.
Babe, I’m sorry for all my misdeeds in the past few days/weeks. I acknowledge that I’ve not been fair to you on many fronts… If you’d let me, I’d want to make it up to you. Call me when you feel up to it.
Xoxo❤️Truly, what God cannot do does not exist…
Just after I finished reading the text from hanty, Precious called; “Oboy I DE come house o”…
It was 10:15am, and my day was starting on the most awkward foot.
